another use of PGP/GPG is to encrypt messages, for security purposes.. 
you would probably want to make SURE you were sending delicate/sensitive 
info to the right person..
I actually got my key signed by someone from  Europe, who was in Athens 
for a seminar. We exchanged photo IDs and keys, neat way to meet new people!
