[ale] Mint login question

When I login into my Mint VM as root and open a terminal, it puts me in
/root/Desktop and not in /root.  Why?
It doesn't read my .bashrc or .bash_profile (both of which didn't exist...I
created them).  Why?
What is the file .dmrc?  Should it be changed?  To what?

        [root at asher-laptop ~]# cat .dmrc


        [Desktop]
        Session=default
