I think before I started using nedmail on plan 9, I was viewing
base-64 encoded HTML in mutt without a GUI using w3m. I
see this in my .muttrc:
# This wasn't entirely straightforward to figure out: How to see
# Thunderbird-generated HTML mail as plain text.
set mailcap_path="~/.mailcap"
auto_view text/html
... and this in my .mailcap:
text/html; w3m %s; nametemplate=%s.html
text/html; w3m -dump %s; nametemplate=%s.html; copiousoutput
