If they're using Windows, be sure to turn off the auto-updates. It would 
be very easy to chew up over a gig per month that way. (The autoup for 
sp3 and IE8 would put you at... at least 2g.) Virus updates are getting 
bigger, since some packages download the whole kaboodle everytime rather 
than just changes, too.

There's quite a few offline-update-cd-makers out there to solve the Win 
update dilemma.

If you're using linux, well, you probably know the drill on updates. :)
