[ale] weird mail issue

I configured sendmail to use mail.bellsouth.net as a smarthost and 
masquerade as an appropriate valid host name. If I send email via the 
command line as a normal user, all works fine.  If I send email via the 
command line as root, it bounces complaining about an invalid host.

Hints?
