Each latop is different. I found out that on our Acer 5100s that we need to power off the laptop and hook up the monitor so the laptop would "see" the external connection. This is *not* os specific. The biggest issue I've had is dealing with the incompatibilities of older LCD projectors and some monitors with my laptop.
