Not really.

Have you tried tapping F11 repeatedly during and after POST?  I'm assuming yes, 
though trying to be thorough.

Keep in mind, too, that HP's 'recovery' WILL cost your friend any and all data 
on the Windows harddrive.

Also, what model HP?
