Okay, I think I've figured out a rather hideous way to add a new application
link to the desktop:

*  Off-click on the "application launcher" (big blue arrow typically at the
end of the panel)
*  Edit application menu to add your new app there
*  On-click application launcher
*  Drag new icon to desktop

Wow, that's pretty hideous. But it appears to be the only way.  Worked fine
for Adobe Acrobat 8.
