[ale] SS/CF drives (was: Hardened Industrial Miniature PCs)

Does anybody have good experiences with replacing a standard laptop
harddrive with a SS drive?   Is it transparent to the OS (or more
specifically will it work with Debian/Ubuntu?)   MTBF?  Expected
lifetime?
