as a UNIX fan I would go with snortsam.net and snort 

for linux use m0n0wall or pfsence http://www.pfsense.org/screenshots/

If you wanna be different you can go further with floppy linux like www.freesco.org.
It is a lot flexible. I was using it for a years in earlier versions. Old box, floppy, two NICs and your engineering abilities.
