Have you seen the page [0] on the Ubuntu wiki? In my experience step 3 
(Network Bridging) is already done for you. Step 7.2 covers the vmware 
conversion

Below is my quick guide to getting started.

sudo aptitude install kvm libvirt-bin virt-manager virt-viewer
sudo adduser `id -un` libvirtd
sudo adduser `id -un` kvm

Logout and login.

virt-manager -c qemu:///system
