"Print to file" generates a postscript document, don't select it if you 
want PDF. Instead, choose the cups-pdf printer and print normally. To 
see where it ends up, check the value for "Out" in 
/etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf. In Ubuntu, the defaults is ~/PDF.
