[ale] OT: bad sound card or bad speakers?

The fact that the static only occurs when you turn up the volume would 
lead me to believe it's the sound card, but at the same time, the 
definition of static varies from person to person, so it could be the 
cone of one of the speakers are ripped.  Try turning the balance all the 
way to one channel and another and see if you still get static.
