[ale] Setting up fail2ban

I have installed 'fail2ban' on my Slackware box running 2.6.21.5 to divert 
a flood of attempts at guessed SSH logins, but I don't see it working: 
continuing flood of login attempts but no entries in 
/var/log/fail2ban.log.


In jail.conf: under [ssh-iptables]:
Q
enabled  = true
...
logpath  = /var/log/messages
findtime  = 240
maxretry = 5
...

Script startup says:

"INFO   Using Gamin"
  but I don't have Gamin installed.

'#iptables -L' doesn't show any rules that might have come from 'fail2ban'

TIA for setup and debugging suggestions on 'fail2ban'.
