[ale] .php3 file references??

I'm trying to help migrate a software package from an old linux distro 
to a newer system.  Many of the files reference include files of the 
form xxx.php3, however there are no *.php3 files on the system.  It 
appears that there are xxx.php files for many if not all the includes. 

Somehow the old system knows how to translate .php3 to .php.  I'm 
assuming either Apache or php as some configuration option that needs to 
be set, however I haven't found the right key words to uncover the solution.
