[ale] Custom bootable CD or DVD

Hi everyone,
I've been tasked with building a turn-key Linux box that will boot
from a CD or DVD and run one specific application. It will need
to have an HD or SSD available for swapping and writing logfiles, but
the OS, the custom user-land application, and all required libraries
will run from the CD.
I've played around with DIY Linux before, and got to the point of
booting a custom CD with Busybox and a shell. However, from an
"enterprise friendliness" standpoint it would be good to base this
project on a mainstream distro. Is there any particular distro I
should look at? In the absence of suggestions otherwise, I hear a
faint voice yelling "Slack!" in the distance...
Thanks,
