I wouldn't feel guilty, they did not handle the problem well at all.
Further, I really think we've just seen the tip of the iceberg here.

It all went down hill when two things happened. Darryl, the main guy
there left. About the same time is when they were purchased. I don't
know which happened first, but both were a bad blows. They didn't
replace Darryl, just piled more work on everyone else. They still had
some good folks there, but they were overwhelmed.
