Have you tried http://www.gnu.org/software/gmediaserver/ or its 
descendant http://ushare.geexbox.org/ ? These are the two that I've 
heard of. Ushare has a special xbox compatibility mode.

Attacking the other end of the problem, I see that theres a FUSE 
filesystem that automounts any upnp media servers on a network.
