I have had the same problems with my desktop. I had to add "apic=off or 
noapic depending on which ubuntu version. The fault I had was in the 
biops and was fixed by add the comand.

When I did not add the command I would lock up before ubuntu started up 
to live running and freeze before I could click on install. After 
installing I would have to re-add it to the master boot comand line so 
apic would not start.
