I'm interested in the answers to most of these questions myself. but
i can only help out concretely with one of them.

if it's a stock debian install, you can set up the following variables
in /etc/default/tmpfs:
RAMRUN=yes
RAMLOCK=yes
they'll be read by /etc/init.d/mountkernfs.sh, which should
automatically set up /var/run and /var/lock properly.
