It feels like surrender, but sometimes starting fresh is the quickest way to
solve a problem. I once had an issue where the shift key didn't work in my
account in GNOME unless I first turned on capslock. Stubbornly I spent two
weeks with a process for typing, say, a left parentheses that went like this:
turn on capslock, hold shift, press the left paren key, let go off shift, turn
off capslock. Never could find the problem, so I started fresh from /etc/skel.
