you might want to take a livecd and actually check the drive to be sure
it doesn't have a problem.  some laptops BIOS will ask for a HDD
password when there is a problem with the disk.  apparently it does so
without the user setting one up.

from my understanding there are BIOS fixes that bypass this problem.
