"compile everything by hand" is a reference to Gentoo, not Debian. His
dislike for Debian is probably because he hasn't used it in a while; it
has a reputation for being hard to get running (which is no longer
deserved), and also for being geared towards power users (can't speak to
that one; i've always been something of a power user).
