sorry.  i missed that you said you'd tried ubuntu.  without knowing
why that wasn't satisfactory to you, it's tough to recommend something
that you might like better.  If your goal is to be as lean-n-mean as
possible, i'd start with a minimal debian install:

 http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/4.0_r0/powerpc/iso-cd/

and then add packages as you decide you need them, using aptitude.
