[ale] Problem configuring 'pidgin-2.1.0'

I want to build 'pidgin' in my SuSE-9.3 box. I have the glib development 
package installed, specificaly:

  glibc-devel-2.3.4-23.4

The 'pidgin' configure apparently fails to find the header and whines:
 "You must have the GLib 2.0 development headers installed to build."

I've tried different '--prefix=' values, adding to PKG_CONFIG_PATH, with 
no luck.

What do I need to do to build this app?
