Hi Brian,

Something to try: SpinRite 6 <http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm> from Steve Gibson (you know, the guy that programs in assembly language).  I've had success with it before, and I found it to be worth the relatively low price.  Be prepared to let it take a looooong time to do what it does, due to it doing it the way it does it.  "Thorough" just isn't a good enough descriptor.

Obviously, you should change the drive as soon as possible anyway.
