[ale] Linspire 5.0 Internet Connection

I recently bought a Fry's Linspire computer.

I'm having trouble with the browser and my internet connection.  

I'm sure I'm connected (debug window confirms connect, kppp 
window shows connection and activity, ps shows kppp running) 
but the browser can't open any locations - it's like it doesn't 
recognize there's a connection.

Also, is there a way to automatically launch the browser on 
connection?
