I checked on the current Gentoo situation. You have to use a universal
(as opposed to minimal) LiveCD and you would do either a Stage 1 install
or a Stage 2/3 if you can find the correct Live CD for your 3/4/586.
386 support now exists but may be dropped in the near future.
