Does anyone know the best way to preserve a soldering iron tip?

Is it best to have the iron on for a long time (hour or two), or turn it 
on and off between uses (use for 10 minutes, turn off for 10 mins, etc).

Does the heating and cooling of the tip cause it to wear out or is it 
duration of heat?

Thanks and sorry for the OT post, but I can't think of any other crowd 
that might have a suggestion here.
