[ale] weird mouse behavior

I am running SUSE 10.1 on a DELL desktop, older Dimension 4400 1.6Ghz 
box.
for a while now I've had this annoying attribute of KDE/Kmail. When you 
select an email in the preview pane header ( pane with subject, 
date,receiver) to open it in the preview window, a 
single-click "sometimes" opens it like you double-clicked it, into its 
own window. I've changed the mouse behavior to double-click selects, 
but it still does the same thing.
not sure where to look, any clues?
