[ale] stupid sys admin tricks

Thanks to everyone for the advice and suggestions.  I ended up making  
a backup of /usr, reinstalling Mandriva, and then re-inserting the  
necessary .conf files from the backup ad infinitum.  all is well  
again.  a good learning experience, for sure, and a perfect example  
of "what not to do when you're tired" as sysadmin.
