[ale] load issue (update 2)

I've not yet begun check with a "safe" ps.  Can anyone recommend an .iso image 
I can burn that will have such tools like that, ready to diagnose a 
questionable system?

Additional information:
I installed telnetd, since ssh won't connect.  I login, and get my "usual 
startup stuff" all the way through "you have mail", but I never get a prompt.

My raid drive is a bit slow to repair itself at the moment.  Currently it's 
going to be done in 432313 minutes.  By my calculations, that's just about 
300 days.
