[ale] dialup chatscript failing...help please !

My modem dials and dials and dials [tryin' to connect] and finally
connects...

then, I'm connected for, at most, only a couple of minutes and the logs show
[after bein' dumped back off-line]:

    Warning: Chat script failed
    Phase: deflink:  dial  ->  hangup
    Phase: deflink:  Disconnected!

    .

I would send the entire log file but it's on the computer tryin' to dialup
and I'm typing
what hopefully is the essence of what's happening.
