Geoffrey,

I'm ashamed to say that all I needed to do was plug the speakers into 
the CDROM player instead of the sound card's spkr out connection  :-)
actually it's worse than that, I didn't even know the CD player had a 
spkr outlet....

While I'm at it,... when would the spkr out connection on the sound card 
be used ?
