Yep and that can be a problem if it was.  I had one idea to try an
initialize that free space.  On the FS you are trying to backup try
this:

dd if=/dev/zero of=file

When you run out of space simply delete the file.  Maybe most of that
free space will be simply NULLs and will compress nicely.
