I have been using a 1500 for a while now. It works great with apcupsd.
gapcmon is the gui.

You will have to make sure that you get the config files for apcupsd setup
correctly.
be sure and set:
UPSCABLE usb
and
UPSTYPE usb
DEVICE # this is blank
