for your Debian system take a look at my current sources:
http://prestonboyington.wordpress.com/2006/11/07/sourceslist-change/
all you have to do is install the codecs for whatever you want to play.
then you can use MPlayer, or any other player you want, in Linux.
the only "snag" i can think of is something maybe with the QuickTime,
but i have been able to play any DVD, Divx, mp3, wma, mp4, etc. (so far)
that I have come across.
