I have a simialr setup (Bellsouth DSL) attached to a gentoo
router/firewall/VPN/dishwasher. The DSL modem is set to "through" and
it gives my DHCP enabled eth0 a public IP, BUT his own private IP as
DNS (192.168.1.254) ????. I guess the modem has some sort of dnsmasq
service running.

I do also sometimes get unexplained slowness that are generally fixed
by "rebooting" the high quality modem and restgarting my eth0. I know
this is not of great help but I never cared for helping Bellsouth
troubleshoot their network.
