[ale] Authentication in Sendmail

I've got my sendmail server configured for authentication and I've
configured evolution to authenticate when sending mail.  Where do I
specify my users and their password?  I thought that it would
authenticate against /etc/passwd but that is not the case.  I'm a
regular user on the server and can log in via ssh but sendmail does not
accept that same username and password.
