I put in a nondescript cheapo pci soundcard ($13.- at Fry's). It got
detected right away. Not only that, it produces sound!
Therefore, what I suspected all along is most likely true:
the SuSE9.2 driver snd-intel8x0 is broken.
They had it right in 8.2, messed it up in 9.2. Dummkopfen.
