Yuck. Why not just 'rpm -qf `which tail`' ?
Both + and - work on these three systems:
RHEL ES3 (Taroon):
coreutils-4.5.3-26
/usr/bin/tail 35604 bytes 2003-Aug-12
RHEL ES2.1 Update3 (Panama)
textutils-2.0.14-2
/usr/bin/tail 31100 bytes 2001-Aug-14
RHEL ES2.1 Update3 (Panama) w/ CentOS updates
textutils-2.0.14-3.1
/usr/bin/tail 31051 bytes 2003-Dec-23
