I've never seen this behavior before, but I don't run KDE or Gnome, so
it might be a window manager thing. Or it might just be the way Debian
is packaging firefox. You could try downloading the binaries from
mozilla.org instead of using the Debian package. If you try this, I
would also recommend renaming the .mozilla directory, both to act as a
backup and to prevent any conflicts with settings for the newer version.

Personally, I find this feature indispensable, but to each his own.
This works for firefox 1.0.x, not sure about 0.9.x though: Type
"about:config" in the URL bar and hit return. In the Filter: text
field, type "middle" and wait a moment for the filter to take affect.
Double-click the line "middleMouse.contentLoadURL". The value should
change from true to false.
