If nothing else, working as an unprivileged user forces the user to
ask "why does this program need higher privileges?" Just because
running as root may be easier for the user does not mean that it is
good for the user to do so. The user needs to be aware of what is
happening with his system. Please quit trying to convince everyone
that it is okay to ignore security on a desktop system while
practicing good security measures on a server. Both systems deserve at
least a passing effort at security. No, nothing is fail-safe but
something is better than nothing.
I never intended this horse to be beat so hard; let it rest.

"All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts
pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it
is magnetic to the corruptible. Such people have a tendency to become
drunk on violence, a condition to which they are quickly addicted."
