[ale] multi-processor vs. Tape Drive

I hope someone on this list can point me in the right direction.
I am trying to turn an old dual P3 server into a basic fileserver. I added an adaptec 2200s Dual Chanel SCSI Raid Controller. To Chanel 0 I connected 3 drives for a RAID 5. To Chanel 1 I connected an external Tape drive. I then installed Fedora Core 3.
When I use the SMP Kernel, the system cannot find the Tape Drive (lsmod shows st isn't loaded). When I use the single processor kernel, It finds the Tape drive just fine, but I get only one processor. In either case, it sees the RAID array just fine.
I have updated the BIOS on both the motherboard & the SCSI card. Removing the RAID array or changing SCSI channels makes no difference.
It seems to me that there is a difference in the Kernel configuration somewhere. However, my kernel knowledge is limited at best & my initial attempts to locate a meaningful difference have been unsuccessful.
I am running the basic Kernels installed with Core 3 (2.6.11-1.14_FC3).
If anyone can offer a suggestion as to where I should look in my system's configuration, or direct me towards an appropriate net resource I'd really appreciate it.
