[ale] convert motion jpeg to mpeg?

I've got a digital camera that takes simple movies, too.  Then end up
as .mov files which xine reports art motion jpeg.  I'd rather store
them as mpeg videos.  What tool should I be using to convert them? 
Every time I look around for one I get confused.
