If there is some package that you want to use but it doesn't have the
feature you want in the stable branch then you can either a) use a
backport from backports.org or b) build it yourself. There are four
packages that I do this with: Apache 2.0, PHP 4, MySQL 4, and awstats.
I build the first three from source because I don't like the way they
are packaged in ANY distribution's repository and I use a backport for
awstats. Each of the three that I build from scratch takes about five
minutes to download, build, and install. The base Debian system chugs
along blissfully unaware that I am using software that isn't in it's
apt repository. I know of no base packages that provide extra
functionality in newer versions that are causing any hardships for me.
