You'll be able to install "anything" on "any" Linux machine - and even make it 
"stable." Waiting around for releases isn't the "Linux way" anyway.

I think most people would recommend Gentoo or Slack over Debian.
There are few (if any) benefits for working with Debian. 
Moreover, you'll find more complaints than praise.
Pick something else.

/runs an apt-get-based Debian style system
/thinking of switching to Gentoo in hopes portage is better.
