After you boot &quot;super&quot; single user via Robert Harris's method:

I recommend going through your boot sequence and arrange to start up
&quot;cranky&quot; daemons in background.  This will prevent them from hanging your
bootup sequence.  I always edit to run sendmail in background when it is
being used, for example, since it will hang a looooooong time if there are
network problems.
