[ale] bootsplash configuration and .spl files?

In the boot/loader area of the suse install cd there are files named
[resolution].spl (e.g. 08000600.spl) ...they seem to be used for the
bootsplash images...I have been looking through the docs for gfxboot,
syslinux/isolinux, and bootsplash.org but I can not find any info
about these files...does anyone know how to edit or create custom
replacements for these? or any good how-tos on bootsplash
configuration
