That's the way it is in Gentoo. You create an /etc/raidtab right there
in livecd-space, modprobe the appropriate modules, and saddle up. I did
this recently to work on a junker whose disk I/O could be raised from
~4MB/s to ~6MB/s by establishing a RAID 0 volume between two drives on
different controllers.
